Today it features a business district that has attracted renewed interest as a design district, featuring businesses like the James Gallery, Ceramiche Tiles, Caldwell's, Jacob Evans Kitchen and Bath, and Artifacts, among many others. The West End is a downtown neighborhood in Portland, Maine. It is located on the western side of Portland's peninsula primarily on Bramhall Hill and is noted for its architecture and history. The neighborhood is home to a large number of historic homes and parks and, in 2010, it was called "one of the best preserved Victorian neighborhoods in the country". The Western Promenade, a park laid out in 1836, overlooks the Libbytown and Stroudwater neighborhoods of Portland and beyond. Other historic structures include 68 High Street, The Gothic House, Brown House, Butler House, Ingraham House, Morrill Mansion and the Minott House.

West End (Houston)

West End is a neighborhood in Houston, Texas, United States located along the Washington Avenue Corridor.

Traditionally a working-class neighborhood, recent gentrification has increased the population density and the development of numerous townhome communities. For many residents, the area known as the West End was the land north of Memorial Drive, south of I-10, east of Westcott and west of Studemont.

The area had a variety of architecture. The West End Park vicinity originally had an array of 1920s shotgun-style bungalows. The driveways there were paved with crushed seashells. This was traditionally an African American part of the neighborhood.

The main street that runs east to west until it breaks off towards and over interstate 10, is Washington Avenue.

The area nearer to the beautiful Memorial Park had larger wood-framed houses with expansive yards until it was gentrified, beginning in the 1990s. The park is a neighborhood fixture, and was at one point an army base named Camp Logan where a mutiny raged at one point.

Buffalo Bayou serves as a natural southern border for the West End. White Oak Bayou also meanders through a portion of it. The Houston Heights is a natural buffer to the north.

The official boundaries of West End are Durham Drive to the west, Washington Avenue to the south, I-10 to the north and Yale St. to the east.

The parts of this area that were the worst affected by neglect, poverty, and the Houston crack epidemic have changed into clean and respectful townhomes for many.

West End is also a part of Super Neighborhood 22, an organized collection of neighborhood civic clubs along the Washington Corridor that voices their neighborhoods' interests to various local issues/situations.

West End (Greenville, South Carolina)

West End is a neighborhood in Greenville, South Carolina. Located across the Reedy River in downtown, the west end became home to Furman University when it was first established in 1852. The school expanded to fill fifty acres and then moved to its current location northwest of the city in 1958. The Greenville and Columbia Railroad (now part of Norfolk Southern) arrived there in 1853, bringing increased commercial activity to the neighborhood that had been first settled in the 1830s.

This activity was truncated less than a decade later with the coming of the American Civil War of 1861–65. After the war, though, the introduction of new fertilizers made cotton farming profitable again in the area. Cotton and fertilizer warehouses and numerous support industries sprung up. The commercial success, with its accompanying residential requirements, brought churches and schools to the west end. Chicora College for Women was established in 1893 for women before relocating to Columbia 22 years later. (It merged with Queens University of Charlotte in North Carolina in 1930.)

After the turn of the twentieth century, many textile mills moved into the area from locations nearer to Greenville's center. But by 1930 the shift from textile mills to soft drink manufacturing and bottling had begun. As more and more automobiles became common, dealerships and repair shops also were constructed,

Since the 1970s the West End has been revitalized after many years of decline. In the 2010s the West End Historic District has become the arts and entertainment center of the city. Anchored in the Falls Park on the Reedy, the Liberty Bridge (a pedestrian suspension bridge) crosses over the Reedy River. The Peace Center provides a venue for a large range of cultural events, while Fluor Field at the West End a provides seasonal home for the Greenville Drive, a minor league affiliate of the Boston Red Sox.
